The head that you see here is modelled in clay directly from a live subject, then fired and bronzed. I find the human head fascinating, the concentration it takes to get a good likeness totally absorbing.
I started by wanting to record my children’s likeness before they changed forever but Doug my adolescent son hadn’t the patience to sit still for very long. I overcame the challenge by taking a series of photographs from every angle to work from in order to reduce the “sitting” time. When I work on commission I find this practice works well for busy people.
I prefer to make heads much smaller than a life size head so they can be cradled in a hand. The sculpted head then becomes a tactile and visual experience.
