INSPIRATION
I am inspired by the great outdoors, by atmospheric light over huge vistas and the repeating patterns of things seen in detail. My work is based on recognisable natural forms which usually have an autobiographical significance and celebrate a feeling, a time or a place.
Something beautiful catches my imagination as the beginning of an image. Frost edged leaves for instance or the accidental ripple on a thawing pond, or birds wheeling around in flight. Recently I started a series of drawings and paintings, from some of my photographs taken of spirals and patterns formed in frozen puddles on the track where I live.
Messy charcoal, graphite sticks and sloppy watercolours are the mediums I enjoy working with at the moment. Layers of marks are applied, rubbed and reworked until the desired effect is achieved. I adore the drama of black and white as well as moody and magnificent colour.
